Put on the New

[mk_dropcaps style="fancy-style"]I[/mk_dropcaps] want you to think about the last time you put on something new. There is something special that happens when you put on new clothes. You have a bump in your confidence, you smile more, you have more excitement and most of all you feel good. And that is just from a new piece of clothing. Yes, the feeling fades, but that is because the clothing turns from new to old. Everything in this life passes away. But with Christ we get to put on the "new" every day! This "new" is NOT something that can wear out, get holes, or fade.  It goes far deeper and beyond the external. This "new" transforms completely and is everlasting.

In Ephesians 4:24 it says

[mk_blockquote style="line-style" font_family="none" text_size="16" align="center"] Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (NIV). [/mk_blockquote]

Note the new self comes not with a wave of a wand but from a choice to act. It is not something automatic. We make the decision, but like any commitment, we have to refresh that choice daily to continue to strengthen it. The message translation elaborates saying “take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.”

Our transformation is not from performance but from the simple nature of God infusing and redeeming every part of us. Our role is to be willing participants. We can either submit to God’s process and allow transformation, or work against it. In our human nature, which has a fondness for old memories and habits, resistance is common. Our thinking leans toward restriction and confinement when left unchallenged by others and without divine intervention. But we don’t have to throw our hands up in defeat and walk away from true change. Putting on the "new" is accepting a position of submission and release of control to make room for what space is required to walk in a “more” mindset. Life is limitless with God. We are finite beings serving an infinite God, so there is no other way to be able to carry the "new" apart from walking alongside shoulders that have no max to their capacity.

Why not cling to the promise that

[mk_blockquote style="line-style" font_family="none" text_size="16" align="center"]If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here?! 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV[/mk_blockquote]

It is done and finished. So the thoughts can be there, the habits can still leave traces of their existence, but honor God, take him at His word and believe. Do it. Act accordingly. Regardless of how you feel in the moment, choose to walk in faith. The God we serve cannot lie and His shoulders are best equipped to handle any burden. He has clothed you and me.

If we forget what we are, all we have to do is check the tag on our clothes. You are wearing the brand that never goes out of style, fades, or wears out. You are always dressed to impress.  What is this brand?  It is the brand of the almighty designer…His name is Jesus.
