Results vs Reps

[mk_dropcaps style="fancy-style"]D[/mk_dropcaps]oes this relate to you? You have been working toward the same dream for days, weeks, even years.  The days start to blend together with the repetitions of the necessary daily tasks for your work for the dream.  There are ups and there are downs.  It feels like the roll of waves.  There is a nagging in the back of your mind asking “with all this consistent motion, is anything really happening?”

If yes, then I want to bring you some freedom today and shift your priorities from results to reps.  Caution: this is not an excuse to not have vision.  I shared mine in the post Bringing the Dream to Reality.  And in the Bible it even goes as far to say that without vision people perish (Proverbs 29:18)  But that is not the focus here. Rather, how do you get from your current position to that dream?  It is bringing your best to the current rep (the next step and action), trusting that it is drawing you toward the result.

We must have the picture (the result) in order to direct our daily actions, but we can not be so future focused we have nothing to pour into the moment and what demands that has of us now.  If you think about the reps you do to master any skill, task, or sport you give yourself a lot of grace in the process.  Look to toddlers as they learn to walk.  We don’t criticize them for falling but encourage them in their effort.

Look to Proverbs 3: 5-6 which says

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

We can let go of worry over the result when we trust the reps we are making now are producing in us the character to handle the future God has for us.  That simple truth has brought me to a new level of peace.  I have goals that have yet to be accomplished.  I am doing the basics I know to produce them (like the reps in a gym to produce strength and power).  It is focusing on form, consistency, and most of all remembering the fun you have while you are doing them. The repetitions of today are your current reality of your future dream.  Treat them with that kind of respect and honor.

Today the message is simple.  Check your heart and mind.  What are you focusing more on?  The result or the reps?

Slow down, take a minute and remember why you are doing what you are doing.  Remember, this moment actually is the current reality of your desired result.  God even promised those who are faithful with the little he will trust to be faithful with the much.  We can not despise the days of small beginnings .  After all, that is what our faith starts out as anyway.  God even reassures us that it only needs to be small, even as small as a mustard seed.   With that kind of perspective shift the momentary monotony and labor of the day to day will feel lighter.  In fact dare I say it you may even enjoy it!  God is bringing about a Holy Momentum in your life.  Keep your eyes fixed on Him and cast any worry or anxious thought on him.  Then get back to work on your reps for the day.

Treat today and whatever you do just as you would if you were walking in the reality of your dream. For it is today’s repetitions that are your present reality of your desired result.
