Visioneering: Strip Down
[mk_dropcaps style="fancy-style"]W[/mk_dropcaps]ith just over one week of 2015 under our belts, it seems fitting to take this month to focus on vision. We have looked back on the past and set goals for this year; but what is the bigger picture? Our vision is what compels us to move forward and pushes us out of complacency and our comfort zone into our destiny. Last year, at this time, I read the book “Visioneering” by Andy Stanley. If you are struggling to clarify your vision for this year, for the next 5 years or even what it is you feel called to in life, then I recommend you read it this month.
Let me make a small disclaimer about vision, though: Vision is not the end all, be all. What you see today and this month is just a part of the bigger picture. God knows our current capacity better than we do, He will not give us more vision than we can process. Otherwise we would just be overwhelmed and paralyzed by it, or even worse doubt the vision’s plausibility before we even begin.
Vision is best used as coordinates. You know the general direction you are headed, you understand where you need to make adjustments, step out of your comfort zone, and even more it fuels your passion to press through the day to day. When you know your vision you it is like your role for life is more clearly defined. You can then see where you lack and where God will have to come step in to show you the way. Just because you have this vision does not mean it is automatic. Just like God’s perfect will is not automatic. It is time to in faith, get to work. We must take the time to invest, build, develop, nourish and grow our vision beyond our current reality into something that can be passed on - a healthy legacy.
Where do we start? That’s simple. Clarify the vision.
Clarifying vision is not just daydreaming or haphazardly desiring something, but rather realizing the God-given destiny inside of you. I love the word “visioneering” that Andy Stanley created. It speaks to being an active process. Engineering is the process of creating and our lives are to always be under construction when it comes to our vision. It is something that we will constantly be sharpening and refining. Stanley in the book puts it like this “Vision is a clear mental picture of what could be, fueled by the conviction that it should be.” We take the picture God has given us and engineer it into a specific focus within all of our life’s roles. Throughout this year your vision will be what draws you forward into growth, takes you out of your comfort zone, and pushes you into positive confrontation in order to increase your capacity.
“As Christians, we do not have a right to take our talents, abilities, experiences, opportunities, and education and runoff in any direction we please.” states Stanley. We must step into this 2015 guided by the word we established in 2014 while seeing our word like the road we drive on to our ultimate destination. It is a guide; not a place to stop.
Taking pen to paper and writing out your vision sounds simple enough right? Well do not be surprise if as you sit down to write it the words take a while to come. You will be tempted to put down the conservative, safe and small vision. The true God vision for your life will challenge you to go deep down into the depths of your heart and motivations and be something far bigger than just you. You should be a uncomfortable when the words are facing back at you of where you are called to. That is a good thing, that means your life is about to embark on its greatest adventure yet.
What if the words don’t come? You really don’t know what you are called to? Then you and I have something in common. I was in this place for a long time, and in fact am just coming out of it. Old patterns, belief systems, and strongholds can be a blockage to vision. Even with great words spoken over me to take them and to do them seemed too great of a task. What got me to clear out these foreign objects? As cliche as it may sound it really has been the word of God. Specifically, 3 verses that have been in my quiet time the last couple of months over and over again all with the same message. You cannot keep holding onto the weight of the past and the sin that seeks to trap us AND expect to step into your vision of the future.
[mk_blockquote style="line-style" font_family="none" text_size="16" align="center"]Isaiah 43:18-19
Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.[/mk_blockquote]
[mk_blockquote style="line-style" font_family="none" text_size="16" align="center"]Philippians 3:13
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead...[/mk_blockquote]
[mk_blockquote style="line-style" font_family="none" text_size="16" align="center"]Hebrews 12:1
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us...[/mk_blockquote]
Combining all these verses we get a simple recipe to step into our destiny activating our vision:
Strip off the old + Forget the past + Run your race focusing on Jesus=
Fulfillment of Vision
With the craze and hum life can bring take a few minutes and get quite. Ask God to show you what has been blocking your vision. Write it down. It can be anything from past trauma, hurtful words spoken, habits or poor behaviors, unforgiveness, bitterness, envy, shame, guilt etc… Anything that is not of God that is up for grabs. Once you have all on that piece of paper that God raises up to the surface it is the fun part: strip, shred, cut, tear those things up!!!
Doing this physically is not necessarily something special but pray once you have done it that God has in the spiritual and in our hearts done what we have done in the physical. Those things no longer hold you. They have fallen at your feet just like the shreds of paper fell to the ground. They do not hold you anymore. What you will have to do from this point on however is enforce this freedom. The enemy will try to convince you otherwise. Remember he has been defeated, he can only try and steal what has already be won. 2015 is a year to let your authority and strength in Christ flow out. Your destiny is counting on it.
